A simple, complete way to start fermenting food scraps at home, odor-free and pest-free. One 4-gallon bokashi bin plus farm-made bran to get going. Add a second bin later for a continuous compost cycle. Free shipping.

What's in the set

  • One 4-gallon bokashi bin (14" x 12" x 12") with drain valve and bottom grate
  • A bag of our farm-made MO-kashi bran
  • Packing shovel and drain cup
  • Step-by-step instruction card

How it works

  1. Prep: close the drain valve, set the grate in the bottom, and sprinkle a little bran on the grate.
  2. Fill: add food scraps, sprinkle bran over each layer, and pack it down with the shovel to push out air. Seal the lid tightly between additions.
  3. Drain: drain the liquid from the valve with the drain cup every couple of days.
  4. Ferment: once the bin is full, keep it sealed for 3 to 4 weeks without opening it.
  5. Use it: bury it, layer it into planters, feed it to chickens, or add it to a hot compost pile.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compost meat and dairy?
Yes. Bokashi ferments scraps instead of rotting them, so meat, dairy, and cooked food can all go in.

How long does the bran last?
A 1 lb bag covers two full bin cycles, about 2 months for an average family.

Will animals dig it up?
No. Fermented bokashi doesn't attract wildlife. Customers have left finished bins open outside and watched raccoons ignore them, and once it's buried, we've never seen it disturbed.

Should I get one bin or two?
One bin works, but you'll have nowhere to put scraps during the 3 to 4 weeks it ferments. The 2 Bin Starter Kit lets you keep filling one while the other finishes.
