What's in the kit

• Two 4-gallon bokashi bins (14" x 12" x 12"), each with a drain valve and bottom grate
• A bag of our farm-made MO-kashi bran
• Packing shovel and drain cup
• Step-by-step instruction card

How it works

1. Prep: close the drain valve, set the grate in the bottom of the bin, and sprinkle a little MO-kashi bran on the grate.
2. Fill: add food scraps, sprinkle bran over each layer, and pack it down with the shovel to push out air. Seal the lid tightly between additions.
3. Drain: drain the liquid from the valve with the drain cup every couple of days.
4. Ferment: once the bin is full, keep it sealed for 3 to 4 weeks. Don't open it during this time, because oxygen disrupts fermentation. Start filling your second bin.
5. Use it: dig the finished bokashi into your garden, then start the cycle again.

What to do with finished bokashi

• Bury it in a garden bed
• Layer it lasagna-style into large planters with other soil
• Feed it to chickens
• Add it to an existing hot compost pile for faster, more even breakdown

How long does the bran last?
A 1 lb bag of MO-kashi bran covers two full bin cycles, which is about 2 months for an average family.

How long until it's ready?
Once a bin is full and fermenting, it's ready in 3 to 4 weeks.

Will animals dig it up?
No. Because it's already fermented, wildlife leaves it alone. Customers have left finished bins open outside and watched raccoons pass them by for other food like bird feeders. Once it's buried, we've never seen it dug up or disturbed.

Why two bins?
A full bin needs 3 to 4 weeks to ferment. With two bins, you always have one to fill while the other finishes.
